한반도 역사 화해와 상생을 위한 2018 세계평화대회 조직위원장

우리는 한반도에서의 역사적 화해와 평화를 토론하기 위해서 이 자리에 모였습니다. 먼저 멀리 외국에서 한반도를 찾아와 주신 평화 연구자, 평화 활동가, 평화단체 대표자 여러분! 고맙습니다. 그리고 국내의 여러 도시에서 오신 평화의 일꾼들과 지도자 여러분! 감사의 인사를 드립니다.

 

한반도에서의 평화의 문제는 오늘날 세계 도처에서 논의되고 있습니다. 우리는 서울과 평양에서, 싱가폴과 바티칸, 베이징과 워싱턴에서 한반도의 평화로운 미래가 진지하게 논의되고 있는 것을 날마다 보고 있습니다. 우리도 오늘부터 며칠 동안 인천과 철원, 서울에서 우리의 경험을 바탕으로 한반도에서의 화해와 상생 문제를 토론할 것입니다. 남북분단의 현장도 방문할 것입니다. 마지막 날에는 서울 한복판에서 우리의 평화 의지를 시위할 것입니다.

 

평화대회의 주제는 한반도에서의 화해 문제입니다. 이 문제에서 정부의 역할보다는 주로 시민사회의 역할, 민간단체의 역할을 이야기할 것입니다. 한국의 통일운동사에서 시민의 참여 문제는 물론 새로운 것은 아닙니다. 1972년 박정희 정부와 김일성 정부가 7.4공동성명을 통해 남북통일의 원칙을 제시한 적이 있습니다. 그 때부터 한국의 시민사회는 통일 노력에서 시민들의 참여를 주장했습니다. 1988년에는 한국기독교교회협의회가 ‘민족통일과 평화를 위한 한국기독교회 선언’을 통해서 이 문제를 다시 한번 강력하게 제기했습니다. 우리는 이것이 올바른 방향이라고 생각하기 때문에 이번 평화대회에서도 ‘민’의 역할을 주제로 삼았습니다. 세계 각지의 분쟁과 전쟁 지역에서 활동해 온 여러분들로부터 그 점을 이야기 듣고 싶습니다.

 

세계평화대회는 한국YMCA가 준비했습니다. 이 대회에는 통일된 한반도에서 활동하고 싶은 한국YMCA의 오랜 꿈이 서려 있습니다. 물론 이 꿈은 모든 한국인들의 꿈이기도 합니다. 이 꿈의 성취를 위해 문화체육관광부가 후원해 주었습니다. 도종환 장관님과 국회 문화체육관광위원회 위원장이신 안민석 의원께 감사의 인사를 드립니다. 이학영 의원님, 안호영 의원님의 협력에도 감사드립니다.

 

이번 대회에 북조선 참가자들이 없는 것이 아쉽습니다만, 우리들의 이야기를 그들에게 전할 것입니다. 감사합니다.

<2018 World Peace Convention Opening Address>

Chairman of the organizing committee of the 2018 World Peace Convention 

We have gathered here to discuss about the historical reconciliation and peace in Korean Peninsula. 

First of all, I would like to thank all researchers of peace, peace activities and representatives of 

peace groups who visited Korea from far corners of the globe! And, all workers and leaders of peace from many cities in Korea, thank you very much!

Everywhere, people are discussing about the issue of peace in Korean Peninsula. Not only in Seoul and Pyung Yang, but also in Singapore, Vatican, Beijing and Washington, we witness serious 

discourses on the peaceful future in Korean Peninsula. For several days from today, we, too, will discuss in Incheon, Cheowon and Seoul, about our experiences and reconciliation and common future in Korean Peninsula. We will visit and see where the South and the North is divided. Finally, we will demonstrate our will to peace at the heart of Seoul.

The topic of the Peace Convention is the reconciliation in Korea. We will talk less about the roles of the government and more about the roles of the civil society, civil organizations. The participation of citizens in the history of the movement for the reunification of Korea is, of course, nothing new. 

In 1972, the Jeong Hee Park government of the South and the Il Sung Kim government of the North have announced the July 4 Joint Declaration, which outlined the principles of the reunification of Korea. Since then, the civil society of Korea has persistently argued for the participation of citizens in the reunification efforts. In 1988, the National Council of Churches in Korea has pronounced the ‘Declaration of the Korean Christians for the National Reunification and Peace’ to reiterate the issue. 

We believe it is the right way. That is why we chose the role of the citizens as the topic of the Peace Convention. We want to hear what you have to say from your experiences in dispute areas and war zones in various corners of the globe.

The World Peace Convention is organized by YMCA Korea. YMCA Korea with the desire and hope to work in the united Korea. Every Koreans, I’m sure, have the same dream. The Ministry of Culture, 

Sports and Tourism has supported the event. Minister Jong Hwan Doh and Congressman Min Seok Ahn, who is the Chairman of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Commission of the National Assembly, 

thank you very much. Also, we would like to express our deep appreciation to Congressmen Hak Young Lee and Ho Young Ahn.

We are sorry we missed people from the North Korea, but we will make sure they hear our stories.
