<2018 세계평화대회 축사>

한반도와 동아시아의 평화를 위해 세계 각지에서 모인 평화의 사람들을 가슴 깊이 환영합니다. 또한 오늘과 같은 뜻 깊은 자리를 위해 깊은 애정과 관심을 갖고 지원해주신 도종환 문화체육관광부 장관님께 감사의 인사를 전합니다. 그리고 세계대회 준비를 위해 그동안 노고를 아끼지 않았을 한국YMCA전국연맹을 비롯한 ‘2018 세계평화대회 추진위원회’의 수고에도 감사드립니다.
한반도와 세계 평화를 비폭력으로 주창했던 3.1운동 100년을 앞둔 올해, 남북 정상은 서로 손을 잡고 판문점을 넘나들며 평화를 안아 왔습니다. 남북의 민은 모두 평화롭고 자유롭게 남북을 오가는 꿈을 꾸고 있으며, 한반도에 하루 빨리 평화체제가 정착되기를 염원하고 있습니다. 3.1운동은 정부가 없던 식민지 시절, 민이 중심이 되어 자발적으로 자유와 독립, 평화를 전 세계에 외쳤고 이 땅에 주권을 세웠던 해입니다. 이제 3.1운동이 100년이 되는 지금, 한반도 민은 다시 ‘민에 의한 평화’, ‘민이 만드는 평화’를 외치고 있습니다. 이번 대회가 100년 전 이 땅에 주권을 세웠던 선조들의 염원을 이어받아 이 땅에 진정으로 민에 의한 평화와 자유를 만들어가는 계기가 될 수 있기를 기대합니다.
팔레스타인, 남아프리카공화국, 아일랜드, 동티모르, 캄보디아, 예멘, 독일 등 국제정치질서 아래에서 인종과 종교, 정치 등 다양한 이유로 갈등과 분쟁을 경험했던 평화의 사람들이 한자리에 모여 서로의 경험을 나누고, 한반도와 동아시아, 그리고 세계의 평화질서를 민의 이름으로 만들어가고자 하는 것은 놀라운 경험이자 시간이 되리라 생각됩니다. 제가 평생을 몸담았던 한국YMCA는 ‘인도주의’와 ‘민의 참여’를 주창했던 ‘88선언’의 정신에 따라 민이 중심이 되는 남북한의 평화를 위해 많은 노력을 기울여왔습니다. 2005년, 해방 60주년을 맞아 한국YMCA는 매년 2천대씩 3년 동안, 자전거를 북에 보내 등 그동안 남북 민간의 협력을 위해 노력해왔습니다. 지난 2018년 7월, 치앙마이 세계대회에서는 ‘세계YMCA 평양 연락사무소 개소’와 청소년과 청년을 중심으로 한 사회문화체육 교류에 세계의 평화 시민들이 적극적인 참여를 제안한 것으로 알고 있습니다. 이런 노력들이 더욱 많이 토론되고 열매 맺는 세계평화대회가 되기를 또한 기대합니다.
이 자리에 계신 많은 분들은 80년대 엄혹한 독재 아래에서도 남북의 교류와 평화를 위한 도잔소 회의와 글리온 회의를 이끌어내고 평생을 한반도 평화를 위해 수고해 오신 분들임을 잘 알고 있습니다. 오늘 세계평화대회가 지난 100년 전 3.1운동 이후 한반도와 동아시아의 평화를 위해 수고해온 국내외 민간운동의 꽃이 아름답게 피어나는 시간이 되기를 소망하며 축하드립니다.

<2018 World Peace Convention Welcoming Address>

I sincerely welcome people of peace gathered here from every corner of the world for the peace of Korea and East Asia. Also, I would like to thank Minister Jong Hwan Doh of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, who supported today’s event with deep love and attention. And, I want to express my deepest thanks to YMCA Korea and members of the ‘Organization Committee for the 2018 World Peace Convention.’
At last this year, on the threshold of the Centennial Anniversary of March 1 Movement, where proclamation of peace in Korea and the world was announced nonviolently, the leaders of North and South Korea crossed Panmunjom hand in hand, embracing peace. People of the South and the North are dreaming of peacefully, freely visiting other parts of Korea, and desire that the peace system is established in Korea Peninsula. March 1 Movement is a cry for liberty, independence and peace to the world by the citizens during the colonial era when there was no proper government; it firmly established the sovereign of this land. Now, before the Centennial Anniversary of March 1 Movement, people of Korea are shouting again, for ‘peace by the people,’ ‘peace built by the people.’ I sincerely hope this event will usher in the establishment of peace and liberty by the people on this land, following the footsteps and desires of our ancestors who established sovereignty in this land.
Palestine, South Africa, Ireland, East Timor, Cambodia, Yemen, and Germany: It’s a list of people who experienced conflicts and disputes for varying reasons such as race, religion and politics. It’s also a list of people of peace who gathered here together to share their experiences, and to create the peace of Korea, East Asia and the world in the name of the people. It was, I believe, an amazing experience and time. I devoted my life to Korea YMCA, which put enormous efforts for the peace of Korea by the people, in accordance with the spirit of the 88 Declaration, which proclaimed humanism and participation of the people. In 2005, the 60th anniversary of the Liberation, Korea YMCA has sent 2,000 bicycles every year for 3 years to North Korea. We worked hard for the cooperation of citizens of the North and the South. I am also aware that at the World Convention held in Chiang Mai on July 2018, proposals were made for the establishment of the liaison office of World YMCA at Pyung Yang, and the active participation of the peace-loving citizens of the world to the exchange of society, culture and sports among youths and younger generations. I have high hopes that during the World Peace Convention, these and other efforts are further discussed and be fruitful.
I am very well aware that many of those attended here have lead the Gonzone Conference and the Gleon Conference for the exchange and peace between the North and the South, even against the harsh dictatorship of 1980s, and devoted their entire lives for the peace of Korea. I hope today’s World Peace Convention is the time the efforts of Korean and international civil societies for the peace of Korea and East Asia blossom spectacularly and be fruitful. I sincerely congratulate all of you.
