“들녘으로 나가 보면, 거기에는 칼에 찔려 죽은 사람들이 있고, 도성으로 들어가 보면, 거기에는 기근으로 고통받는 사람들뿐이다. 그렇다. 예언자도 제사장도 어찌할 바를 모르는 채로 온 나라를 헤맬 뿐이다.”(예레미야 14:18)
가자지구에서 전쟁이 다시 시작되었습니다. 이번에는 가자에서 시작되었습니다. 이 전쟁은 이스라엘에 엄청난 고통과 파괴를 초래했습니다. 많은 사람들이 이 전쟁을 이스라엘에 대한 부당한 전쟁으로 보고 있습니다. 하지만 모든 인간과 평화와 정의를 추구하는 사람이라면 반드시 물어봐야 할 질문이 있습니다.: 이 전쟁은 왜 시작되었을까요?
우리 모두는 전쟁에 반대합니다. 우리 모두는 70년 이상 팔레스타인 국민에게 강요된 불의와 현존하는 분쟁에 대한 정의롭고 최종적인 해결책과 평화을 위해 일하는 것에 대해 '예'라고 말합니다. 이스라엘은 팔레스타인 사람들이 존재하기 위한 어떤 권리도 없다고 생각합니다. 국제 사회는 정의롭고 최종적인 해결책을 찾기 위한 결정을 이행하기에는 너무 약합니다.

가자 지구에서 갑작스럽게 시작된 전쟁의 원인은 무엇일까요?
전쟁의 직접적인 원인은 가자지구와 팔레스타인 지도자, 기타 세계 종교 및 정치 지도자들의 잇따른 최후통첩과 경고에도 불구하고 알-아크사 사원(Al-Aqsa Mosque) 공격을 허용하고 부추기며 무슬림과 기독교인들의 종교적 감정에 도전한 극우 이스라엘 정부의 성립입니다. 또한 이스라엘 점령군은 이스라엘 점령군의 감시와 보호 아래 점령지 팔레스타인 전역에 (이스라엘 유대인) 정착민을 북쪽에서 남쪽으로 확산시켜 팔레스타인 땅을 혼란에 빠뜨리고, 팔레스타인 사람들을 공격하여 살해하고 땅을 몰수하는 것을 허용했습니다.
전쟁을 일으키는 근본 원인은 이스라엘 점령군의 통치와 폭정으로 인해 팔레스타인 사람들이 매일 공포 속에서 살아가고 있으며, 역대 이스라엘 정부, 특히 현 정부가 팔레스타인 국가는 존재하지 않으며 팔레스타인 국민에게는 자결권이 없다고 절대적으로 주장하고 있기 때문입니다. 그리고 그로 인해 발생하는 모든 결과입니다.
여기에 가자지구(360㎢를 넘지 않는 면적에 200만 명이 거주)의 숨 막히는 포위망이 더해졌습니다. 2007년부터 현재까지 가자지구 주민들은 인도적 생활 조건이 전혀 갖춰지지 않은 대규모 개방형 감옥에서 생활하고 있습니다.
이번 전쟁은 이 모든 것에 대한 반응이자 답입니다. 이 전쟁은 이스라엘과 국제사회가 다른 모든 민족과 마찬가지로 팔레스타인 사람들의 존재와 그들의 권리를 인정하라는 요구입니다. 정의와 자유에 대한 요구입니다. 아랍 예루살렘을 수도로 하는 인정된 국가로의 독립에 대한 요구입니다.
이 전쟁은 이스라엘 통치자들에게 무기가 안전을 보호하거나 제공하지 못한다는 것을 말해줍니다. 무기는 죽음을 초래할 뿐입니다. 무기는 누구에게도 생명을 가져다주지 않습니다. 우리는 죽음이 아니라 생명을 원합니다. 우리는 자유와 정의, 독립을 원합니다. 2009년 카이로스 문서 '진실의 순간'에서 우리가 했던 말을 지금 여러분에게 전합니다. "우리의 미래와 이스라엘의 미래는 하나입니다. 우리 모두를 파괴하는 폭력의 순환이냐, 아니면 모두에게 이익이 되는 평화냐."
또한 현재 전쟁에 대한 콜롬비아 대통령의 발언을 다시 한 번 강조합니다.: "이스라엘 어린이들이 평화롭게 잠들 수 있는 유일한 방법은 팔레스타인 어린이들이 평화롭게 잠드는 것입니다."
우리 모두는 사망하거나 부상당하거나 체포된 모든 사람들을 위해 울고 있습니다. 우리는 70년 넘게 울어왔습니다. 전 세계 곳곳의 난민들이 귀환을 요청하고 있습니다. 이스라엘의 감옥에는 수천 명의 정치범들이 자유를 요구하고 있습니다. 강제로 쫓겨난 팔레스타인 사람들이 있고, 당신들이 파괴하고 밤낮으로 습격하며 공포를 심어준 집들이 있습니다.
이 전쟁은 모든 사람들이 깨어나 팔레스타인과 이스라엘에서 일어나고 있는 일, 즉 이스라엘이 팔레스타인 사람들의 소유인 땅에 정착하여 팔레스타인 사람들의 자유를 박탈했다는 진실을 알아야 할 때라고 말하기 위해 시작되었습니다. 이러한 상황은 바로잡아야 합니다. 이를 바로잡는 것은 어렵지 않습니다.
국제법과 국제 표준은 팔레스타인 사람들이 받아들일 수 있습니다. 그것을 받아들입시다. 이 전쟁은 무기가 (안전을) 보호하지 않으며, 약자를 과소평가하는 강자는 자신을 보호하지 못하고 안전을 찾지 못한다는 것을 말하고 있습니다. 안전한 마음이 안전한 요새입니다. 팔레스타인 사람들의 마음은 완전한 자유와 존엄성과 국가를 되찾는 것만이 그들을 보호할 수 있습니다.
여러분의 마음이 순수하다면 더 이상 "아랍인에게 죽음을"이라고 말하지 않을 것이며, 이스라엘 의회의 일부 대표자들의 슬로건인 "아랍인과의 평화 반대, 아랍인에게는 죽음을"은 더 이상 존재하지 않을 것입니다.
이스라엘의 통치자들과 친구들은 이스라엘의 평화가 팔레스타인 사람들의 평화라는 것을 이해해야 할 때입니다. 우리에게 가해지는 노골적인 불의를 지지하는 것은 충분합니다.
가자지구에 대한 포괄적이고 파괴적인 전쟁이 해결책이라고 생각하지 마십시오. 가자지구 팔레스타인인들에 대한 인종 청소가 해결책이라고 생각하지 마세요! 우리는 당신들과 같은 사람들입니다. 우리는 당신과 같은 삶을 원합니다. 우리도 당신과 같은 모든 권리를 원합니다.

Kairos Palestine statement on the war on Gaza

If I go forth into the field,
behold, the slain with the sword!
And if I enter into the city,
behold, those who are sick with famine!
Yes, both the prophet and the priest go
about into a land
that they know not.
Jeremiah 14:18
The war on Gaza again, but this time it started from Gaza. It has caused great suffering and destruction in Israel. Many see it as an unjust war against Israel. But the question that every human being, and every seeker of peace and justice, must ask is: Why did this war start?
We all say, No, to the War. We all say, Yes, to peace, and to working for a just and final solution to an existing conflict and to the injustice that has been imposed on the Palestinian people for more than 70 years. Israel does not see the Palestinian people as having any right to exist, and the international community is too weak to implement its decisions to find a just and final solution.
We all mourn and console all the victims on both sides of the conflict. A human being is a human being, both Israeli and Palestinian, and every human being is dear in the eyes of God, and in the eyes of his family, relatives, and loved ones.
No to war, yes to a just and final peace.
What is the reason for this sudden war that started from Gaza?
The immediate cause of the war was the formation of the extreme right-wing Israeli government that allowed and encouraged the attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque, and challenged the religious feelings of Muslims and Christians, despite the successive ultimatums and warnings that came from Gaza, Palestinian leaders, and other global religious and political leaders. This same government has also allowed the spread of settlers throughout occupied Palestine, from north to south, wreaking havoc on the land, attacking Palestinians, killing them and confiscating their lands, under the watch and protection of the Israeli occupation army.
As for the root causes driving the war, they are the permanent state of terror that we Palestinians live in daily from the rule and tyranny of the Israeli occupation army, and the absolute insistence by successive Israeli governments, especially this government, that there is no Palestinian state, and that the Palestinian people have no right to self-determination. And all the consequences that arise from that.
This is in addition to the stifling siege of Gaza (two million people in an area not exceeding 360 km2). Since 2007 until today, the people of Gaza have been living in a large open prison that lacks all humane conditions for living.
This war is a reaction and answer to all of that. This war is a demand for Israeli and international recognition of the existence of the Palestinian people and their rights like all other peoples. It is a demand for justice and freedom. It is a demand for independence in a recognized state with Arab Jerusalem as its capital.
This war is a word to the rulers of Israel that weapons do not protect or provide safety. Weapons only cause death. They do not bring life to anyone. We do not want death, but life. We want freedom, justice and independence. We say to you now what we said in our 2009 Kairos Document, Moment of Truth: “Our future and [Israel’s] future are one. Either the cycle of violence that destroys both of us or peace that will benefit both.”
We also reiterate what the President of Colombia has said in response to the current war: “The only way for Israeli children to sleep in peace is for Palestinian children to sleep in peace.”
We all cry for everyone who died, was injured, or was captured. We have been crying for more than seventy years. Refugees in all parts of the world are asking to return. In your prisons, Israel, there are thousands of political prisoners asking for their freedom. There are Palestinians who have been forcibly displaced, homes you have destroyed, homes you raided day and night, and in which you instilled terror.
This war came to say, it is time for everyone to wake up and know the truth about what is happening in Palestine and Israel, that Israel has settled in a land that belongs to the people of Palestine and has deprived the people of Palestine of their freedom. This situation needs to be corrected. Correcting it is not difficult.
International law and international standards are acceptable to the Palestinians. Let's agree on it. This war came to say that weapons do not protect, and the strong who underestimate the weak will not protect themselves nor will they find security. Safe hearts are safe strongholds. Palestinian hearts, if their full freedom, dignity, and state are returned to them, are your only protection.
If your hearts are pure, your services will no longer say, “Death to the Arabs,” and the slogan of some of your representatives in the Knesset will no longer be, “No, to peace with the Arabs, and death to the Arabs.”
It is time for the rulers and friends of Israel to understand that the peace of the country, and the peace of Israel, is the peace of the Palestinian people. Enough of supporting the blatant injustice being done to us.
Do not think that your comprehensive and destructive war on Gaza is the solution. Do not think that your ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians in Gaza is the solution! We are people like you. We want life like you. We want all our rights like you.
We are on this earth only by the grace of God, not by the grace of any human being. And we will remain in it. Come to an understanding. Come to the path of your correct and permanent security, and our correct and permanent security. We all live in a sacred land, ours and yours. Let us walk in God's ways, together abandon all violence, resort to the good word, begin a new future, and build a new land.
Oh God, teach us your ways so we can walk in them.
Together we can build peace that will be peace for the region and the world.
Turn away from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous
and his ears toward their cry.
